Day Off

Today we will not be doing much in the schoolwork department.  The local public school students have the day off, but the teachers have to work.  My daughter’s best friend’s mom is a teacher and she asked if we could watch her daughter today while she had her parent conferences. So we decided that we would take today off also.  I told the kids that they still need to do their Journal writing and I thought we would take a stab at making bread.  We love McAllister’s soup in a bread bowl, so I thought we’d try to make our own.  I have made bread in the past, with not so great results.  It seems that it never rises high enough to make a fluffy loaf.  I baked it anyways creating a very heavy loaf.  Still tasted good though. I tried to find the frozen dough in the store but I couldn’t find any, so we’ll take a stab at making it from scratch. If nothing else, my daughter and her friend will learn to appreciate what our ancestral moms went through to put bread on the table.  Wish us luck.

I tried once to make sourdough bread bowls….the results were okay, not fantastic.

DD does bread dough in the machine for me, and it rises really nicely. She's been doing rolls lately, and they are nice, fluffy, and delicious. When I make the chicken soup posted on my blog, I have her get a recipe or two of dough going, and then we have yummy rolls to dunk in the soup! We also use this recipe for pizza dough.

    Blessings,

    Anne-Marie

Off the top of my head I have a couple of good recipes for soft bread. I think. lol It's been a whle. Soon we'll be baking the tough bread to use as trenchers in our unit celebration for the Medieval Ages. I was going to do bread soup bowls but then I decided to use a hollowed out sugar pumpkin instead!

    Blessings,

    Laurie

We sort of had the day off too. We went to see a play of a book we read a couple of years ago downtown. It was at 10am, so with travel time, our day was pretty much a loss for traditional academics. The kids around here are on fall break anyway.
